Understanding Fan Specifications: CFM, Static Pressure, RPM, and Noise

CFM (cubic feet per minute) measures the volume of air a fan can move. A higher CFM does not always mean better cooling if the air cannot reach the heat source.

Static pressure tells you how well the fan can push air through resistance such as filters, heatsinks, ducts, and grills. Centrifugal fans typically produce higher static pressure than axial fans.

RPM indicates impeller speed, while noise is usually expressed in dB(A) at a standard distance. Faster fans move more air but create more noise, so selection involves balancing these factors for the target application.
