Planning Cast Basalt Linings for Ash and Slag Conveying

Define the conveying duty

Power-plant ash and slag handling is an established application area for cast basalt linings. Hydraulic conveying exposes the internal surface to solid particles carried in liquid, so selection must begin with the actual medium and operating conditions.

Record the solids, particle sizes, concentration, temperature and water chemistry. Add pressure and flow information from the line design where available. A reference installation shows a possible application; it does not establish that a new plant has the same duty.

Treat the pipe as an assembly

A common composite construction places a basalt liner inside a steel shell with a filling layer between them. The liner provides the wear surface while the surrounding structure and connections must meet the complete line requirements.

Confirm the bore, shell, lining and filling details on approved drawings. Pressure rating and structural suitability must come from the assembly design. A basalt liner should not be selected as a stand-alone pressure component.

Give fittings and connections their own review

Bends, tees and reducers change the flow path and may experience wear differently from straight sections. Identify them individually in the schedule, including geometry, orientation and mating connections.

Flanges, welded arrangements and appropriate mechanical joints are possible design approaches. Select the arrangement for the actual installation, maintenance access and adjacent equipment. Field work must follow an approved method that protects the liner and filling layer.

Plan for inspection from the start

Provide access to expected wear locations and agree receiving checks, installation checks and commissioning procedures. Record any visible transport damage before assembly. Confirm alignment without forcing components into position.

Service life varies with conditions. Use inspection findings to develop the maintenance interval, and investigate changes in operation that could alter abrasion or impact. Discuss the project schedule, drawings and operating data with Chitong before finalizing the specification.
