Cast Basalt in Chemical-Service Linings: A Selection Checklist

Describe the actual exposure

Chemical-service floors, selected tank surfaces and other process areas are among the applications discussed in cast basalt literature. The word corrosion-resistant is only a starting point: the actual chemical, concentration, temperature and exposure pattern must be identified.

Distinguish occasional splash from continuous immersion. Record cleaning fluids as well as the normal process medium. Where solids are present, describe the abrasion and any direct impact separately.

Review every part of the lining

A finished lining includes plates, joints, bedding and the supporting substrate. Each must be compatible with the duty. The apparent suitability of the basalt does not demonstrate that the mortar or joint material is suitable.

Identify cracks, movement, drainage details, penetrations and transitions before selecting the arrangement. These interfaces can determine how a lining performs in practice and should be shown on the project drawing.

Check mechanical and thermal conditions

Cast basalt is a brittle material. Heavy impacts, movement of the underlying structure and rapid temperature changes require review. Avoid using a general material description as permission for an unassessed operating condition.

Confirm the operating range and any abnormal or cleaning cycle with the responsible engineer and installation-system supplier. Use the agreed project specification rather than transferring a temperature or durability figure from another supplier.

Prepare a practical inquiry and handover

Send dimensioned drawings, the lining area, exposure data, photographs and the required installation window. Confirm surface preparation, bedding, joint treatment, cure requirements and inspection responsibilities before work begins.

On completion, retain the material and inspection records and arrange checks for loose pieces, damaged joints or chemical ingress. Chitong can review the supplied project information for product selection; final system suitability is agreed for the actual duty.
